Recently a poster on Quora posed this question, and the advice of Andrew Franklin, Author: How to Get a Job at Amazon, caught my eye. Read his response:
I have written books and coached many people to land jobs. I used to be very bad at interviews. But, I worked really hard, interviewed with many companies, and became quite good at it. Here is one thing people who’re good at job interview “get” that other people don’t:
It’s NOT about you the interviewer; it’s about the employer.
The employer has a problem to solve. It must hire someone to solve that problem. When a job opening is posted, the hiring manager and recruiter cannot wait to get the job opening filled. The hiring manager has goal to hit and has daily work to deal with.
Your focus before/during/after the job interview should be: How you can help the hiring manager to solve his problem/address his pain as soon as possible and make his life much easier/better.
This means you should do the most thorough research/preparation before the interview. When you talk to the hiring manager, you should sound that you’re already working in his/her team. You ask insightful questions, and propose answers that make the hiring manager jump out his/her seat — “wow, this person is exactly what I need. He will make my life so much easier. Done deal”.
Approach each interview with this mind set. You’ll go a long way.
